Manisha Desai is Professor of Medicine, of Biomedical Data Science, and by courtesy, of Health Research & Policy at Stanford. Prior to her role at Stanford, Dr. Desai was a faculty member in the Department of Biostatistics at Columbia University. Dr. Desai was recruited to Stanford to found the Quantitative Sciences Unit (QSU) in 2009 and serves as its director. The QSU is a collaborative unit of 30 data scientists who engage clinical and translational investigators on cutting-edge scientific initiatives. Dr. Desai's research interests include the design of clinical trials, the handling of missing data, the incorporation of data from mobile technology into clinical trials, and methods for generalizing clinical trial findings to real world target populations. In her role at Stanford, Dr. Desai leads a number of data science cores for large scale projects. For example, Dr. Desai leads the Data Coordinating Center for the Apple Heart Study, a large data-intensive study to evaluate a novel algorithm for identifying atrial fibrillation using an app on the Apple Watch.
